DISCOVERIES Interior Design
From monumental infrastructure to poetic architecture, off-form concrete has long served as architecture’s most versatile medium, equally capable of structural boldness and delicate refinement. In a tropical context, this versatile medium finds new expression in The Rainforest Residence, where its materiality transcends Brutalist roots to achieve a synthesis of permanence and permeability.
This residence, designed as a private retreat for an artist family, emerges with the precise volume of a rectilinear form, simultaneously grounded and suspended amidst the forested slope. The architects’ extensive experience with hillside houses informed a nuanced approach to the challenging yet gentle terrain. A key innovation lies in the circulation concept: instead of an enclosed environment, transitional spaces are open-air journeys, immersing occupants in the surrounding rainforest.

“We believe that every small element of a building is important, and we strive to provide quality design details that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.”
- Choo Gim Wah Architect
Beyond the building’s monolithic facade lies a sophisticated interplay of texture, light, and spatial sequencing. The concrete shell serves as both a protective frame and a curatorial canvas, its materiality contrasting with dappled forest light to provide a backdrop for an evolving collection of artworks. The home’s reverence for nature is apparent from the moment one steps inside, with a sweeping roof crowning the foyer and framing the surrounding forest like a living painting.
